In the Spotlight: Catherine McMurray

Every so often, we like to give you a glimpse behind the scenes at J Edward Sellars and share a bit about the team supporting your financial plan.

We pride ourselves on building close, meaningful relationships with our clients as we help you work towards your goals. As we get to know all about you, this series aims to help you get to know more about us.

This month, we’re putting Catherine McMurray in the spotlight. Read on to learn all about Catherine’s background, role, and coat-hanging pet peeve.

What is your role at J Edward Sellars?

In my role as client services manager, I oversee the running of the admin department. I’m here to support clients through every step of their financial journey, from onboarding to issuing and implementing recommendations and transfers. I also liaise with providers and third parties to fulfil client requests, such as withdrawals and contributions.

My day-to-day role also includes tasks like answering the phone, booking client appointments, sending client communications, and responding to queries.

What is your career background?

I joined J Edward Sellars in 2013, about six months after graduating from the University of Exeter with a BA (Hons) in politics.

What do you love about your role?

With such a range of responsibilities, I enjoy the variety my role offers. No two days are ever the same.

What is the best piece of advice you ever received?

All’s well that ends well. I think it’s a helpful reminder that many struggles or challenges life throws our way will be worth it for the end result.

Of course, this can be a particularly useful mantra in financial planning. Many of us will encounter obstacles as we work towards our goals. But the feeling of reaching the goal is often far greater than the struggle of working towards it.

What’s the most rewarding part of your role at J Edward Sellars?

I love the feeling of completing a task for a client, knowing that we’ve fulfilled our service and I’ve helped bring them closer to achieving their financial goals.

What do you think sets J Edward Sellars apart from other financial planners?

Our family feel is really special. Not only are we a close-knit team, but we also really get to know our clients. We keep in touch regularly and take the time to truly understand each client’s circumstances, preferences, needs, and ambitions. That way, we can tailor our financial advice to each client.

Quick-fire questions

What do you like to do outside of work? I enjoy running and am currently working towards my personal bests in both the 5K and 10K.

What new skill would you love to learn? I sew already, but I would love to add knitting to my bank of skills.

What’s your pet peeve? People hanging their coats up by the hood when there is a hook sewn in!

What are you most looking forward to in the next 12 months? The next year will be all about family. With hopes of expanding our family, we’re looking for a larger home.

We’ll also be trying to squeeze in as much family time and as many days out as possible, as well as a holiday, before our son starts school in September next year.
