In the Spotlight: Harry Elson

Now and then, we like to share a little bit about the team that helps keep your finances moving towards your goals.

At J Edward Sellars, we love getting to know all about our clients – from your financial ambitions to how you spend your free time. So, to help you get to know us, we’re putting our team in the spotlight.

This month, Harry Elson is taking centre stage. Keep reading to learn all about his role as client services adviser, as well as his brand-new role as a dad!

What is your role at J Edward Sellars?

As client services adviser, my days usually start with our morning investment committee meeting. This is where we review market movements to help shape the firm’s investment approach.

I spend the rest of my day meeting with clients and preparing reports as I support them with their financial planning needs. No two days are the same – which is something I really enjoy!

What is your career background?

I first discovered my passion for personal finance and investing while I was at university studying Film, TV, and Digital Production at Bath Spa University. While I’d originally planned to become a film director, realising this passion ultimately steered me into financial services.

I have recently completed all of my financial planning qualifications, and I’m excited to continue developing my financial services career.

What do you love about your role?

I love getting to know our clients and building lasting relationships with them. I get to meet people from all walks of life, which I really enjoy.

I also feel very fortunate to be part of the J Edward Sellars team. Their support and encouragement have helped me grow both personally and professionally – and continue to do so!

What is the best piece of advice you ever received?

“Your future is built by what you do today.” I think this especially rings true in financial planning: small decisions can make a big difference over time.

It’s an important reminder to focus on what you can do today and celebrate the small wins along the way.

What’s the most rewarding part of your role at J Edward Sellars?

I find it very rewarding to know that the work we do can make a real difference to our clients’ lives. It’s a great honour to play a part in helping them achieve their goals and plan for the future.

What do you think sets J Edward Sellars apart from other financial planners?

We always put our clients at the heart of everything we do. We’re committed to supporting each and every client to achieve their financial goals, which is why we work closely together to create tailored plans that work for our clients.

Plus, because we’re independent, we can offer advice that’s genuinely in their best interests.

We’re also passionate about building lasting relationships based on trust. It’s important that clients feel comfortable coming to us with any question – no matter how big or small – and know we’re here to support them every step of the way.

What do you like to do outside of work?

My partner and I recently welcomed our first child! So, life outside of work is mostly spent enjoying family time and getting used to being new parents.

When I’m not busy changing nappies, you’ll usually find me out on a long walk with my dog, enjoying days out with my family, or watching football at the weekend and hoping my team comes away with a win!

Quick-fire questions

What new skill would you love to learn? I’d really love to learn to play the guitar and convince myself I’m the next Brian May. But whether anyone else would agree is another matter!

What is your pet peeve? When people jump the queue. It’s a very British complaint, I know, but a reasonable one.

Which three people would be at your dream dinner party? Robin Williams, Jim Carrey, and Ricky Gervais. It might be chaos, but I’d be guaranteed a good laugh.

What are you most looking forward to in the next 12 months? Having recently become a dad, I’m really looking forward to spending my first Christmas with my son and creating special family memories. Professionally, I’m excited to continue growing as a financial planner and developing my career with J Edward Sellars.

What is your favourite film? The Dark Knight is probably my favourite film. I’ve watched it more times than I can count, and it never gets old. It has a great story, brilliant performances, and is one of those films I’ll always stop to watch if it’s on TV.
