As financial planners, we have the pleasure of getting to know our clients very well. Usually, we know your goals, we understand your fears, and you’ve probably told us all about your loved ones and hobbies.
But with many of our team working behind the scenes to help you achieve your financial goals, you might not have had a chance to get to know us quite so well.
So, we’re excited to introduce a new feature that puts the J Edward Sellars team under the spotlight. Every other month, you can discover how each team member supports our clients and what makes them tick.
First onto the stage we have our director, Helen Diamond. Read on to discover what Helen does here at J Edward Sellars and how she has quite literally gone the extra mile in her personal life.
What is your role at J Edward Sellars and what does it entail?
As a director, I head up the HR function at J Edward Sellars. As well as overseeing the running of our back office and HR, I work with two of our other directors to manage the company accounts and ensure our continued compliance with regulatory standards.
What did you do before joining J Edward Sellars?
I’ve been part of the J Edward Sellars team for over 41 years. It was my first job after leaving college! Having started out as an office junior, I worked my way up over the years to become a director in 2014.
What do you love about your role?
Life at J Edward Sellars is more than just a job; it’s like an extended family. I feel very fortunate to work in an environment where everyone just gets along and supports each other to deliver great outcomes for our clients.
I also love the variety in my role – no two days are ever the same!
What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve received?
Communication is key. I’m a big believer in maintaining an open dialogue, both internally and with our clients. When everyone feels safe to ask questions, listens actively, and keeps each other in the loop, we can better collaborate to support our clients.
What’s the most rewarding part of your role at J Edward Sellars?
I love watching the team develop, both as a collective and individually. It’s truly rewarding to support my colleagues in achieving their professional goals, so they can support our clients in achieving their financial ones.
What do you think sets J Edward Sellars apart from other financial planners?
The team here is passionate about going the extra mile – as we have been for over 50 years. Our financial planners build real, lasting relationships with our clients, some of which have lasted for decades (and counting).
By taking time to understand their needs, goals, and fears, we can go beyond finances and support them with everyday challenges.
What has been your biggest adventure in life so far?
Besides raising my two lovely daughters, I’d have to say either reaching Everest Base Camp or exploring Machu Picchu with my husband. Climbing Everest was a lifelong goal of mine, and the trek to the summit is an adventure I’ll certainly never forget.
Likewise, roaming around Machu Picchu was a real bucket-list adventure. I found the ancient Inca ruins fascinating, and the scenery was just stunning.
What do you like to do outside of work?
As well as climbing the odd mountain, I also enjoy cycling and am a keen runner. I’ve completed 10 marathons around the world and I’m an avid member of the local running club. So, I guess you could say I have taken “going the extra mile” quite literally!

Which three people would be at your dream dinner party? Louis Theroux, Miriam Margoyles, and Simon Reeves.
What are you most looking forward to in the next 12 months? Going on more adventurous holidays with my husband.
What’s your favourite film? Grease.
